West Coast Partnership Development (WCPD) has backed “Better Transport Week”, a national campaign to promote sustainable travel across the UK.

The initiative, which is being held by the charity Campaign for Better Transport, will run from 12 – 18 June 2023 as part of their 50th anniversary this year.

The aims of “Better Transport Week” are to promote the wide range of benefits of public transport, shared mobility, walking and cycling to the public, and encourage more people to travel sustainably.

Throughout the campaign there will be events up and down the country, supported with social media activity.

WCPD Managing Director Shamit Gaiger, who is also a Board Trustee for the charity, spoke at a launch event this week. As part of a panel discussion, she explained that transport needs to put customers first, be accessible, affordable for all and be greener.

In front of an audience of industry colleagues, she talked about her beginnings in role with the charity two decades ago to establish key principles for sustainability  , and her pride that they are still used in rail businesses today.

The launch was hosted by Norman Baker, former transport minister and now Director of External Affairs at Campaign for Better Transport, and held at the Railway Industry Association in London.

Shamit was joined on the panel by a number of industry experts including Emily Turner, bus advocate and podcast host, Pete Bond, Head of Integrated Transport, Transport for West Midlands, Hana Sutch, Founder and CEO of Go Jauntly, Chris Dixon, Founder and CCO, Pedal Me, and Ali Clabburn, Founder & Chairman at Mobilityways.

Speaking about the event, Shamit said: “I was delighted to promote the Better Transport Week as we got to celebrate 50 years of Campaign for Better Transport – an organisation close to my heart for their fantastic work to push for positive change within our industry.

“To deliver ‘Better Transport’ we have to put the customers first, and we have to be more collaborative in the way we work across all modes. With the current social and political and economical challenges, to deliver success we cannot afford to work in silos against each other – either we win together, or we lose together.”

“Better Transport Week” will feature a different theme each day with events, promotions and actions taking place throughout the week. For more details: https://bettertransport.org.uk/better-transport-week/

About West Coast Partnership Development

West Coast Partnership Development (WCPD) is designing and mobilising new high-speed services for the UK. These services will run on the new High Speed 2 (HS2) route and the existing railway, delivering quicker journeys and more capacity between London and Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Cumbria and Scotland.

Its goal is to maximise the benefits of the significant investment from the Department for Transport into the new High Speed 2 (HS2) railway, as well as the upgrades to the railway on the West Coast Mainline.
